How it is computed
Each formula adds a fixed amount per inch over 5 feet (152.4 cm) to a base weight. Devine: 50 kg (men) or 45.5 kg (women) + 2.3 kg per inch. Robinson: 52 / 49 kg + 1.9 / 1.7 kg. Miller: 56.2 / 53.1 kg + 1.41 / 1.36 kg. Hamwi: 48 / 45.5 kg + 2.7 / 2.2 kg. Below 5 feet the base weight is used. The last column is the weight at a BMI of 18.5 to 25.
FAQ
Which formula is the right one?+
None is exact. Devine is the one most used in clinical dosing; the formulas differ by a few kilograms, and the BMI range shows how wide a healthy weight can be.
Do these formulas account for frame size or muscle?+
No. They depend on height and sex only, so a muscular or large-framed person can sit above them while being healthy.
