How it is computed

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². Imperial values are converted to kilograms and metres first. WHO bands for adults: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 normal, 25 to 29.9 overweight, 30 and over obesity.

FAQ

Does this chart work for children?+

No. Children and teens are assessed with BMI-for-age percentiles; the calculator has a child mode for ages 2 to 19.

Is BMI a good measure for athletes?+

Not always. BMI does not tell muscle from fat, so muscular people can show as overweight. Waist-to-height ratio or body fat adds context.
