Frequently asked questions

What does my BMI number actually mean?+

BMI (Body Mass Index) divides your weight by the square of your height to give a quick estimate of whether your weight falls in a range typically associated with underweight, healthy weight, overweight, or obesity categories. It's a screening tool, not a diagnosis of health or body fat.

Why doesn't BMI account for muscle versus fat?+

BMI only uses height and weight, so it can't distinguish a muscular athlete's dense tissue from an equivalent weight of fat. This is why very muscular people are sometimes classified as 'overweight' by BMI despite having low body fat.

Are the BMI categories the same for everyone?+

The standard categories were developed mainly from data on adults of European descent, and some health organizations now recommend lower thresholds for certain Asian populations, who can face higher health risks at lower BMI values. Age, sex, and ethnicity all affect how well BMI reflects health risk.

Is a 'healthy' BMI enough to know I'm healthy?+

No. BMI ignores where fat is distributed on the body, and abdominal fat carries more metabolic risk than fat elsewhere even at the same BMI. Waist circumference or waist-to-height ratio are useful complements, and this isn't a substitute for a full medical evaluation.

Does BMI work the same way for children and older adults?+

No, children's BMI is interpreted using age- and sex-specific percentile charts because body composition changes as they grow, and this calculator is intended for adults. Older adults also tend to lose muscle mass, so the same BMI can represent a different body composition than it would in a younger adult.
