Formula
bit = byte × 8 ; 1 KiB = 1024 B, 1 kB = 1000 B= 8388608
Note
This result is a simplified model: it converts the single value you entered with the exact factors shown, and rounds to the display precision. It does not know your measurement's accuracy, and cooking or density conversions depend on how an ingredient is packed. Check critical figures against the original units.

How many bits are in a byte?+
One byte equals 8 bits, a convention that goes back to early computing standardizing on 8-bit bytes to represent a full range of 256 values (0-255), enough for a character set. The calculator simply multiplies or divides by 8 depending on direction.
Why does my internet speed show a much smaller number in MB than in Mbps?+
Internet speeds are conventionally advertised in bits per second (Mbps), while file sizes and downloads are shown in bytes (MB) — since a byte is 8 bits, a '100 Mbps' connection downloads at roughly 12.5 MB/s (100 ÷ 8), not 100 MB/s, which trips people up constantly.
What's the difference between MB (megabyte) and Mb (megabit), and does capitalization matter?+
Yes, capitalization is the whole distinction: a capital B means bytes, a lowercase b means bits, and a megabyte (MB) is 8 times larger than a megabit (Mb) of the same numeric prefix. Always check the case carefully when reading data plans or bandwidth specs.
Are kilobytes calculated using 1,000 or 1,024?+
Historically, computing used 1,024 (2¹⁰) for a kilobyte because binary systems favor powers of two, but storage manufacturers and most modern standards now use the decimal 1,000 (with 1,024 formally called a kibibyte). This calculator handles the bit/byte ratio; check separately which base your source uses for larger prefixes.
Why would I need to convert bits to bytes at all?+
It matters whenever you're comparing network throughput (measured in bits) against a file size or storage capacity (measured in bytes) — for example, estimating how long a download will take, or whether a connection can stream a file of a given size in real time.
