How is cycling time estimated?+
The calculator divides the distance by an assumed average cycling speed, which varies considerably by bike type, rider fitness, and terrain — commonly 15-20 km/h for casual riding on flat ground.
Why does terrain make such a big difference for cyclists?+
Hills dramatically affect cycling speed more than walking speed because of the added resistance to overcome; a route with significant climbing can take much longer than the flat-ground estimate, even though downhill sections partly compensate.
Does wind affect the estimate?+
A basic calculation does not include wind, but a strong headwind can meaningfully slow a cyclist compared to a tailwind or calm conditions, especially on exposed routes.
What speed should I use for a more realistic result?+
Use a lower speed (10-15 km/h) for a heavy commuter bike, cargo, or hilly terrain, and a higher speed (25-30 km/h) for a road bike ridden by a fit cyclist on flat pavement.
Is cycling time linear with distance?+
Roughly yes for a single continuous ride at steady effort, but longer rides typically involve fatigue, breaks, and traffic stops that reduce the effective average speed compared to a short ride at the same nominal pace.
