What formula does this calculator use?+
Average speed equals total distance divided by total time (speed = distance / time). It reflects the overall pace of the trip, not the speed at any single moment.
Why is my average speed lower than my cruising speed?+
Average speed accounts for the entire trip, including stops, slow traffic, and acceleration/deceleration phases. A car cruising at 100 km/h can still have an average speed well below that once stoplights and rest breaks are factored in.
Does the unit of distance and time matter?+
Yes, you must keep units consistent: distance in kilometers with time in hours yields km/h, while miles with hours yields mph. Mixing units without conversion will produce a meaningless result.
Can average speed be used to estimate travel time for a different distance?+
Yes, once you know the average speed for a given route or condition, you can estimate the time for a similar route by dividing the new distance by that same average speed, assuming similar conditions.
Is average speed the same as average velocity?+
No, speed is a scalar based on total distance traveled, while velocity is a vector based on displacement (straight-line distance from start to end). A round trip has an average velocity of zero but a nonzero average speed.
