Formula
L = d × (consumption ÷ 100); cost = L × price= 88.8

How is total fuel cost for a road trip calculated?+
The calculator divides total trip distance by your vehicle's fuel efficiency to get fuel quantity needed, then multiplies that by the price per unit of fuel.
Why should I use my actual fuel efficiency instead of the manufacturer's rating?+
Manufacturer ratings are measured under controlled conditions; real-world efficiency varies with driving style, terrain, cargo weight, and highway versus city driving, so using your own recent fill-up data gives a more accurate estimate.
Does the calculator account for fuel price differences along the route?+
It uses the single price you enter; if prices vary significantly between regions on a long trip, running the calculation with a low and high estimate gives you a realistic cost range.
How does elevation change affect fuel usage?+
Climbing mountains or driving through hilly terrain increases fuel consumption noticeably compared to flat highway driving, so trips with significant elevation gain may cost more than the flat-terrain estimate suggests.
Should I add a buffer to the estimate?+
It's wise to add 10-15% for detours, traffic, air conditioning use, and the fact that most vehicles are slightly less efficient than their rated average, especially at higher speeds.
