What does this calculator estimate?+
The customs duty owed on an imported shipment, based on the declared value of the goods and the applicable duty rate for that product category.
What inputs are needed?+
The customs value of the goods (often the price paid plus freight and insurance, depending on the valuation method used) and the duty rate percentage that applies to that product's tariff classification.
How is duty calculated?+
Multiply the customs value by the duty rate percentage. Goods valued at $10,000 with a 5% duty rate owe $500 in duty.
Why does the duty rate vary so much between products?+
Duty rates are set per tariff classification code (HS code) and often depend on the product category, country of origin, and any trade agreements in effect — the same shipment value can owe very different duty depending on what's actually being imported and from where.
Does this include VAT, sales tax, or other import fees?+
No — this calculates customs duty specifically. Many countries also charge import VAT or other fees on top of the duty-paid value, which are separate calculations not included here.
