How it is computed

PPI = √(width² + height²) ÷ diagonal: the number of pixels along the diagonal divided by the diagonal in inches. Higher PPI looks sharper, but the distance you sit from the screen matters as much as the number.

FAQ

What PPI looks sharp on a monitor?+

At a normal desk distance, around 110 PPI looks crisp without scaling, and 140 PPI or more looks very sharp, usually with 125% to 150% scaling.

Why do phones need a much higher PPI than TVs?+

You hold a phone about 30 cm from your eyes and watch a TV from 2 to 3 m. The farther the screen, the fewer pixels per inch the eye can tell apart.
