Time relationship

Formula

paid hours = (clock-out − clock-in) − break minutes ÷ 60

= 7.75

Note

This is a simplified model: it uses fixed conversions (60 minutes per hour, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year) and ignores leap years, daylight saving changes, public holidays and irregular month lengths. Check the result against a real calendar before relying on it.

Frequently asked questions

How does the calculator total a workday from time card entries?+

It subtracts each clock-in time from its corresponding clock-out time for every segment worked that day, then adds the segments together to get the total hours worked.

How are unpaid breaks handled?+

If breaks are entered as separate clock-out and clock-in events, they're automatically excluded from the total since only the time between paired work segments is counted; if breaks are just noted separately, they should be subtracted manually.

What happens if a shift crosses midnight?+

The calculator needs to treat the clock-out time as occurring on the next calendar day; otherwise, subtracting a smaller next-day time from a larger start time produces an incorrect negative result.

Does the total show decimal hours or hours and minutes?+

Many time card calculators show both, since payroll systems often need decimal hours (like 7.5) for pay calculations, while hours and minutes (7 hours 30 minutes) is easier for an employee to verify at a glance.

Can this handle multiple clock-in/clock-out pairs in one day?+

Yes, if you had several separate work sessions in a day (for example, a split shift), enter each pair separately and the totals are summed to get the full day's worked hours.
