Frequently asked questions

What is the grace period and why does it have a cost?+

The grace period is the months after graduation before payments start, but on unsubsidized loans interest keeps accruing during that time. That unpaid interest is often added to your principal (capitalized), so the loan balance grows before you make a single payment.

Does the grace period cost apply to all student loans?+

No — subsidized federal loans don't accrue interest during the grace period, so there's no added cost. Unsubsidized federal loans and most private loans do accrue interest, which is what this calculator measures.

Can I avoid the capitalized interest hit?+

Yes — making interest-only payments during the grace period, even small ones, prevents that accrued interest from being added to your principal, which keeps your total balance lower for the life of the loan.

How much difference does capitalization actually make?+

It depends on the balance, rate, and grace period length, but capitalizing several months of interest on a large loan can add hundreds of dollars to the principal, which then itself accrues interest for years afterward.

Why does a longer grace period cost more than a shorter one?+

Interest accrues every day the loan is unpaid, so a six-month grace period accrues twice the interest of a three-month one on the same balance and rate, all else being equal.
