Note

This schedule applies the standard amortization formula to the figures you entered. It assumes a fixed rate, payments made on time, and no fees, insurance or rate changes; a real lender's statement will differ.

Frequently asked questions

How is a car loan schedule different from a mortgage schedule?+

The mechanics are the same — fixed payments split between interest and principal — but car loans are shorter (typically 3-7 years) and carry higher rates for the same principal, so the interest portion shrinks faster relative to the total.

Why do I owe more than the car is worth in the first year or two?+

Depreciation on a new car is steepest in the first two years, often outpacing how fast you build equity through payments, especially with a small down payment or a long loan term — this gap is called being 'underwater' or upside down.

Does a longer loan term always mean I pay more interest?+

Yes, for the same rate and principal — stretching the term to lower the monthly payment increases the total interest paid, because the balance stays higher for longer even though each payment is smaller.

How much does a bigger down payment change the schedule?+

A larger down payment reduces the financed principal directly, which lowers both the monthly payment and total interest, and it also reduces the risk of owing more than the car is worth.

Can I use this schedule to plan an early trade-in?+

Yes — check the projected loan balance at the month you plan to trade in and compare it to the car's expected resale or trade-in value to see whether you'd need to bring cash to the deal.
