What does this calculator tell me?+
It estimates the minimum internet bandwidth needed to stream video at a chosen quality level without buffering, based on the video's bitrate. It helps you check whether your connection can support a given streaming resolution, possibly with multiple simultaneous streams.
Why does my stream still buffer even though my internet speed is higher than the requirement?+
Your advertised speed is a maximum, not a guarantee, and it's shared across every device and application on your network at that moment. Wi-Fi interference, network congestion during peak hours, and other households sharing the same local infrastructure can all reduce your real, usable bandwidth below the stated requirement.
Does higher resolution always mean higher bandwidth needs?+
Generally yes, but bitrate also depends on the video codec, frame rate, and content complexity — a fast-motion sports broadcast needs a higher bitrate than a static talking-head video at the same resolution. Modern codecs like H.265/HEVC or AV1 can deliver the same visual quality at a lower bitrate than older codecs like H.264.
How do I calculate bandwidth for multiple simultaneous streams?+
Multiply the per-stream bitrate requirement by the number of simultaneous streams you expect, since each stream draws bandwidth independently. A household streaming 4K on one TV and HD on a tablet at the same time needs the sum of both requirements, plus headroom for other network activity.
Should I use my connection's maximum speed or leave a safety margin?+
Leave a safety margin: streaming services and network engineers typically recommend having at least 25-50% more bandwidth than the minimum requirement to absorb fluctuations and avoid quality downgrades or buffering.
