How does the calculator convert steps into distance?+
It multiplies your step count by your average stride length, so 10,000 steps at a 0.75m stride equals roughly 7.5 km. Accuracy depends heavily on how well the entered stride length matches your actual gait.
Why is my stride length different from a generic default value?+
Stride length depends on height, leg length, walking speed, and even terrain, so a generic default (often based on average height) can misestimate distance for taller or shorter individuals. Measuring your own stride by counting steps over a known distance gives a far more accurate conversion.
Does walking versus running change the steps-to-distance conversion?+
Yes, running strides are typically longer than walking strides at the same step count, so the same 10,000 steps covers more distance running than walking. Use a stride length appropriate to the activity you actually did.
Why do two people with the same step count cover different distances?+
Taller people and those with longer legs naturally take longer strides, covering more ground per step than someone shorter. Step count alone is a poor proxy for distance when comparing between different individuals.
How accurate are the step counts from phones and fitness trackers feeding into this calculator?+
Wrist and phone accelerometers are generally accurate for walking but can overcount steps during other arm movements or undercount during pushing a stroller or cart. Treat the resulting distance as a solid estimate rather than an exact measurement.
