Frequently asked questions

How is my pet's daily food portion calculated?+

The calculator estimates your pet's resting energy requirement from its weight, then multiplies it by an activity factor (kitten/puppy, adult, senior, spayed/neutered, weight loss) to get daily calories. That number is then divided by the calories per cup or per gram printed on the food's label to get a portion size.

Why does the portion differ from the feeding chart on the bag?+

Bag charts are generic averages for an 'average' pet of that weight, while this calculator uses your pet's actual weight, life stage and activity level. Individual metabolism, breed, and whether the animal is spayed or neutered can shift real needs well outside the printed chart.

Should I include treats in this portion?+

No, the result is the target for the main food only. Treats should stay under about 10% of total daily calories, so if you feed treats regularly, reduce the calculated meal portion slightly to compensate.

What if my pet is overweight or underweight?+

Use the weight-loss or weight-gain activity setting rather than your pet's current weight goal in the weight field — enter the current weight, then pick the appropriate activity multiplier so the calorie target reflects the desired trend, not just maintenance.

How often should I recalculate the portion?+

Recalculate whenever your pet's weight changes noticeably, after spay/neuter surgery, with a change in activity level, or when switching to a food with a different calorie density, since the portion is tied directly to that value.
