How is daily water need calculated for livestock?+
The calculator multiplies the number of animals by a water intake rate per head, based on species and body weight, since larger animals and higher-producing animals (like lactating dairy cows) require substantially more water per day.
Why does temperature affect water requirements so much?+
Water intake can double or more during hot weather because animals use water for evaporative cooling in addition to basic metabolic needs, so summer requirements should be calculated separately from cooler-season baselines.
Does lactation or production stage change the estimate?+
Yes significantly — a lactating dairy cow can need 3-4 times the water of a dry cow because milk itself is roughly 87% water, so production stage is one of the biggest single factors in accurate water planning.
Is drinking water the only water source I need to plan for?+
This calculator estimates direct drinking water needs; it doesn't include water used for cleaning, cooling systems, or irrigation of feed crops, so total farm water demand will be higher than the livestock figure alone.
How much extra capacity should my water system have beyond the daily estimate?+
Most livestock water systems are designed with 1.5-2 times the calculated daily average as peak capacity, to handle hot-day spikes and ensure all animals can drink without long waits at the trough.
