What is a negative split and what does the percentage represent?+
A negative split means the second half of a race or effort was completed faster than the first half. The negative split percentage quantifies exactly how much faster, expressed as the percentage difference between the two halves' times.
How is negative split percentage calculated?+
It's typically ((first half time − second half time) / first half time) × 100. A positive result confirms a true negative split, since it means the second half took less time than the first, while a negative result means the athlete actually slowed down, a positive split.
Why do coaches often recommend negative splitting as a race strategy?+
Starting conservatively and finishing strong tends to be a more physiologically efficient pacing strategy than starting too fast and fading, since going out too aggressively can burn through glycogen stores and build lactate faster than the body can clear it. Many record-setting distance performances have been run as, or very close to, even or negative splits.
What does a 0% negative split percentage mean?+
A result of exactly 0% means the athlete ran (or swam, or biked) both halves in exactly the same time, an even split. This is often considered a well-executed, controlled pacing strategy in its own right, distinct from both positive and negative splitting.
Is a bigger negative split percentage always better?+
Not necessarily. A very large negative split can actually suggest the athlete started too conservatively and left performance on the table in the first half, rather than executing perfect pacing. The ideal is often a small, controlled negative split, not the largest possible one.
