What does true shooting percentage measure that field goal percentage doesn't?+
True shooting percentage (TS%) accounts for the extra value of three-point shots and the impact of free throws, giving a single efficiency number that reflects points produced per shooting possession. Field goal percentage treats every make the same regardless of its point value.
What is the formula for true shooting percentage?+
TS% = points / (2 × (field goal attempts + 0.44 × free throw attempts)). The 0.44 factor is an empirically derived estimate of how many free throw attempts on average result in a possession being used, since not every free throw pair stems from a live-ball shooting foul.
Why is the free throw attempt figure multiplied by 0.44 instead of counted directly?+
Free throws come from different situations, shooting fouls, technical fouls, and-one plays, that don't each consume a full possession the same way a field goal attempt does. The 0.44 coefficient is a league-wide statistical estimate meant to approximate the true possession cost of the average free throw trip.
What is considered a good true shooting percentage?+
In modern professional basketball, a TS% above 60% is considered excellent efficiency, around 55% is solid, and anything below 50% generally indicates inefficient scoring. League averages typically hover in the mid-50s depending on the era and pace of play.
How is TS% different from effective field goal percentage (eFG%)?+
Effective field goal percentage adjusts only for three-pointers being worth more than two-pointers, but ignores free throws entirely. True shooting percentage goes a step further by also folding in free throw efficiency, making it the more complete single measure of scoring efficiency.
