Formula breakdown
Formula
L = per-link × links × (1 + waste)= 240
Note
Simplified model: these are standard craft estimates based on rectangular layouts, quoted gauge and nominal densities. Real fabric nap, directional prints, shrinkage, pattern matching, yarn lots and supplier SAP values vary, so always make a swatch or test piece and buy a little extra.

Why do wire-wrapped designs need more wire than the finished piece's length?+
Wrapping, coiling, and looping consume extra wire beyond the straight-line distance, since each wrap or loop uses several times its own circumference in wire. This calculator adds that consumption on top of the base length for wraps, clasps, and findings.
How does wire gauge affect how much I need?+
Thicker wire (lower gauge number) holds its shape with fewer wraps but is harder to bend tightly, while thinner wire (higher gauge number) is more flexible but may need more wraps for structural strength, changing the total length required for the same design.
Why do wrapped loops use noticeably more wire than a plain loop?+
A simple loop uses roughly the wire needed to go around a mandrel at the loop's diameter, but a wrapped loop adds several full wraps around the wire's own neck below the loop, each consuming its own circumference of wire again.
Does wire hardness (dead-soft vs half-hard) change the length I should calculate?+
Hardness doesn't change the geometry-based length calculation, but half-hard wire holds shape with less need for extra wraps for stability, while dead-soft wire may need reinforcement wraps that dead-soft projects should budget extra length for.
How much extra wire should I cut beyond the calculated length?+
Cut at least 2-3 inches extra per component for a working tail to grip with pliers while wrapping, since a wire cut to the exact calculated length often leaves nothing to hold onto during the final wraps.
