How does block size affect the total block count?+
Smaller blocks need more of them to cover the same finished quilt area, so cutting a target size in half roughly quadruples the block count. This calculator divides the desired finished quilt dimensions by the block size, accounting for any sashing between blocks.
What is sashing and why does it change the count?+
Sashing is the strip of fabric sewn between blocks that adds visual spacing and can also make a quilt easier to size precisely. Since sashing adds extra inches between each block, it slightly reduces how many blocks fit into a fixed quilt size compared to blocks sewn edge to edge.
Why doesn't the block count divide evenly into a nice number?+
Finished quilt dimensions rarely divide perfectly by a chosen block size, so the calculator rounds to a full row/column count and the actual finished size may come out slightly larger or smaller than your original target.
Does border width affect the block count?+
No, borders are added around the pieced blocks after the block layout is set, so they change the overall quilt size but not how many blocks are needed inside it. Only the pieced area (rows times columns of blocks, plus sashing) determines block count.
How do I use this for a specific finished quilt size, like queen?+
