Frequently asked questions

Why do soccer statistics use 'per 90 minutes' instead of per game?+

Not every player plays a full 90-minute match, since substitutions, injuries, and rotation mean playing time varies significantly game to game. Standardizing to a full 90 minutes lets you fairly compare a player who came on as a late substitute to one who played every minute of the season.

How is goals per 90 calculated?+

Goals per 90 is (total goals / total minutes played) × 90. This effectively projects a player's goal-scoring rate onto a full match, regardless of how their actual playing time was distributed across appearances.

What's considered a strong goals per 90 rate?+

For an elite striker in a top league, a goals per 90 rate above 0.6-0.7 (roughly a goal every game and a half) is considered very strong, while rates above 1.0 are exceptional and rare even among top scorers. Rates naturally vary a lot by position, with strikers expected to post much higher numbers than midfielders or defenders.

Why might goals per 90 overstate a player's true ability over a small sample?+

Over a handful of matches, a couple of lucky deflections or an easy penalty can inflate a per-90 rate dramatically, since the denominator (minutes played) is still small. This statistic becomes more reliable and stable as the sample of minutes grows across a larger portion of a season.

Does goals per 90 account for the quality of chances a player receives?+

No, it only counts actual goals scored regardless of how difficult or high-quality the chances were. This is why analysts often pair goals per 90 with expected goals (xG) per 90, which measures the quality of chances taken, to see whether a player is over- or under-performing their underlying chance quality.
