Formula

CO₂(kg) = kWh × intensity(g/kWh) ÷ 1000

= 342

Note

This is a simplified model: it applies the standard equation to the numbers you entered and ignores real-world losses, weather variation, tariff structures and equipment tolerances. Wind power assumes air density 1.225 kg/m³ at ISA sea level and the power coefficient you enter (Betz limit 0.593). Verify with measured data or a professional energy audit before making purchasing decisions.

Frequently asked questions

What does the emission factor represent?+

The emission factor is the amount of CO2 (or CO2-equivalent) released per kWh of electricity generated in your specific grid region, and it varies enormously depending on the local mix of coal, gas, nuclear, hydro, wind, and solar. A coal-heavy grid can emit 5-10 times more CO2 per kWh than a hydro- or nuclear-heavy one.

Why do two people using the same kWh have different carbon footprints?+

Because the calculation multiplies your electricity use by your local grid's emission factor, someone on a cleaner grid (more renewables and nuclear) produces far less CO2 per kWh than someone on a fossil-fuel-heavy grid, even for identical consumption.

Does this account for how electricity generation changes throughout the day?+

A basic calculation uses an annual average emission factor, but real grid intensity fluctuates hour to hour as renewable output and demand shift, meaning your actual footprint is somewhat lower when you use power during high-renewable periods like sunny afternoons.

How does this compare to my footprint from other sources like gas or driving?+

Electricity is usually just one slice of a household's total footprint alongside heating fuel, transportation, and consumption-based emissions, so this calculator isolates the electricity portion rather than giving a complete personal carbon footprint.

Will switching to a renewable energy plan change this number?+

If your utility offers a verified renewable energy plan or you install solar, your effective emission factor drops significantly, though the physical grid mix delivering power to your outlet doesn't change instantly. The accounting depends on how your utility or region tracks renewable energy credits.
