Semester GPA reflects only the courses taken in one term, while cumulative GPA is the running average across every term completed so far. This calculator merges your existing cumulative GPA and credits with a new term's results to produce an updated cumulative figure.

Because GPA is a weighted average, updating it correctly requires knowing how many credits the old average was based on, so the new term's grade points can be added to the right denominator. Without prior credits, a new term would incorrectly be weighted as equal to your entire academic history.

The more credits you've already accumulated, the more diluted a single semester's impact becomes, since it's now one part of a larger average. A rough semester in your final year moves cumulative GPA far less than the same semester would have in your first year.

Policies vary: some institutions replace the old grade entirely (grade replacement), while others average both attempts into the cumulative GPA. Check your school's repeat policy, since the calculator assumes you're adding new credits rather than replacing prior ones unless you adjust the inputs accordingly.

No, mathematically a semester GPA lower than your current cumulative GPA will always pull the cumulative average down, though by a smaller amount if your accumulated credits are large. Only a semester GPA equal to or higher than your cumulative GPA can maintain or raise it.
