How is a weighted score different from a simple average?+
A simple average treats every assignment equally, while a weighted score multiplies each grade by its assigned percentage of the final mark before summing them. Two students with the same raw scores can end up with different weighted totals if their category weights differ.
What happens if the weights don't add up to 100%?+
If your weights sum to less than 100%, the calculator normally scales the result up proportionally, and if they sum to more than 100%, it scales down, but the more reliable fix is to correct the weights themselves so they total exactly 100%. Always check your syllabus for the exact weighting scheme before entering numbers.
Can I use this to figure out my grade before all assignments are submitted?+
Yes, you can enter only the weights and scores for assignments already graded to see your current standing, but the result reflects a partial weighting rather than your final grade. Once remaining work is graded, rerun the calculation with all categories included.
Does a zero on one assignment always tank the final grade?+
A zero's impact depends entirely on that assignment's weight: a zero on a 5% quiz barely moves the total, but a zero on a 40% final project can drop the overall score dramatically. This is why weight distribution matters more than the number of assignments.
Why does my calculated grade not match what's shown in the school portal?+
Discrepancies usually come from rounding rules, extra credit not accounted for, or a dropped-lowest-score policy the portal applies automatically. Confirm the exact weighting formula your instructor uses, since some portals apply category weights differently than a straightforward weighted average.
