Why does fabric count matter so much for finished size?+
Fabric count (like 14-count Aida or 28-count evenweave) tells you how many stitches fit per inch, so the same design stitched on higher-count fabric comes out physically smaller even though the stitch count is identical.
How much extra fabric margin should I leave around the design?+
A common minimum is 3 inches of blank fabric on all sides beyond the stitched area, giving 6 inches total extra in each dimension, to allow for framing, hooping, or finishing without the stitching running too close to the edge.
How do I convert a pattern's stitch count into fabric size?+
Divide the design's stitch count (width and height) by the fabric count to get the stitched area in inches, then add your margin on all sides; for 14-count fabric and a 140-stitch-wide design, the stitched area alone is 10 inches wide.
Does 'count' mean the same thing on evenweave as on Aida?+
Not exactly. Aida count refers to stitch blocks per inch worked one-to-one, while evenweave count refers to threads per inch and is usually stitched over two threads, so a 28-count evenweave gives roughly the same stitch size as 14-count Aida.
Why would I round the fabric size up to a standard cut?+
Fabric is often sold in standard pre-cut sizes or by the yard from a bolt, so rounding your calculated minimum up to the next practical size avoids an awkward custom cut and leaves room for stretching onto a frame during stitching.
