Formula
Trees = annual CO₂(kg) ÷ sequestration per tree (kg/year)= 214.28571428571
Note
This is a simplified model: it applies the standard equation to the numbers you entered and ignores real-world losses, weather variation, tariff structures and equipment tolerances. Wind power assumes air density 1.225 kg/m³ at ISA sea level and the power coefficient you enter (Betz limit 0.593). Verify with measured data or a professional energy audit before making purchasing decisions.

How much CO2 does a single tree actually absorb?+
It varies widely by species, age, and climate, but a commonly cited average for a mature tree is roughly 20-25 kg of CO2 absorbed per year, with young trees absorbing much less and mature trees more. This calculator uses an average figure, so actual sequestration for any specific tree can differ substantially.
Why does tree age matter so much for offsetting?+
A newly planted sapling absorbs very little CO2 in its first few years and only reaches significant absorption rates after a decade or more of growth, so offsetting today's emissions with new trees is really a decades-long commitment, not an immediate offset.
Is planting trees a permanent way to offset carbon?+
Only if the tree survives and the carbon stays stored long-term; wildfires, disease, logging, or land conversion can release that stored carbon back into the atmosphere. Tree-based offsets are generally considered less permanent than avoiding emissions in the first place.
How many trees would offset my average yearly emissions?+
Using roughly 20-25 kg of CO2 absorbed per tree per year, offsetting a typical individual's annual footprint of several tonnes of CO2 would require dozens of mature trees absorbing continuously, which illustrates why tree planting alone rarely offsets a full personal footprint quickly.
Does the calculator account for different tree species or growing conditions?+
Most basic calculators use a single average absorption rate rather than species-specific data, since actual sequestration depends heavily on species, soil, climate, and forest density. For precise offset accounting, specialized carbon registries use more detailed, location- and species-specific models.
