Time relationship

Formula

average = total hours ÷ number of tasks

= 0.4

Note

This is a simplified model: it uses fixed conversions (60 minutes per hour, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year) and ignores leap years, daylight saving changes, public holidays and irregular month lengths. Check the result against a real calendar before relying on it.

Frequently asked questions

How is average time per task calculated?+

The calculator divides the total time spent by the number of tasks completed, giving the mean duration per task.

Why can an average be misleading if task durations vary widely?+

If a few tasks take unusually long while most are quick, the average gets pulled upward and may not represent a 'typical' task well; in that case, a median value would better reflect the middle of the distribution.

How can this be used to estimate future project timelines?+

Multiply the average time per task by the number of remaining tasks to project the additional time needed, though this assumes future tasks are similar in complexity to those already measured.

Does the calculation distinguish between task types?+

A single average blends all task types together; if tasks vary significantly in nature (e.g., simple versus complex), calculating a separate average per task category gives more accurate estimates.

What's a good sample size for a reliable average?+

A larger number of completed tasks generally gives a more statistically reliable average; an average based on just two or three tasks can be skewed heavily by one outlier and shouldn't be trusted for long-term planning.
