How does tile size affect the total count I need?+
The calculator divides your wall area by a single tile's area, so larger tiles mean fewer total tiles for the same coverage, but grout line width also shifts the effective coverage slightly since more, smaller tiles mean more total grout area.
Why does the calculator add extra tiles beyond the exact area needed?+
A waste factor of 10% for straight layouts (or 15-20% for diagonal, herringbone, or intricate patterns) accounts for cut tiles at edges, breakage during handling, and future repairs, since matching a discontinued tile years later can be impossible.
Does grout line width change how many tiles I need?+
Slightly. Wider grout lines mean each tile-plus-grout module takes up more space, which can reduce the number of full tiles that fit and increase cut tiles at the edges, though the effect is usually small unless grout lines exceed 3/8 inch.
Should I subtract the area behind fixtures like a shower valve?+
Only if that area will never be visible or tiled — most installations still tile behind removable fixtures for a finished look, so it's safer to calculate the full wall area and let the installer cut around fixed obstacles from the extra tiles.
Why do tiles come in boxes with odd quantities like 11 or 13 per box?+
Box quantities are set by the manufacturer based on a fixed square footage per box (often 10-11 sq ft), not a round tile count, so the calculator converts your area need into boxes, which is how you'll actually purchase them at a tile retailer.
