How is total harvest tonnage different from yield per hectare?+
Yield per hectare is a rate describing productivity; total tonnage is the absolute quantity you actually have to store, transport, or sell. Two farms can have the same yield per hectare but very different total tonnage simply because of field size.
Should I enter the gross weight or the net weight after moisture adjustment?+
For logistics planning (trucks, storage bins) use the gross weight as it left the field. For sales and settlement purposes, use the net dry-matter weight after moisture and dockage deductions, since that is what you get paid on.
Why does my total tonnage not match my per-hectare yield multiplied by area?+
Small rounding in the reported yield, or measuring area differently (GPS-mapped versus deeded acres), can create a gap. Always recompute from the same source area and yield figures to reconcile the difference.
Does this calculation account for storage losses?+
No — it reflects what was measured at harvest or delivery. Shrinkage from spoilage, pests, or further drying in the bin happens afterward and needs to be tracked separately.
How can I use total tonnage to plan trucking?+
Divide the total tonnage by the capacity of a single truckload to estimate the number of trips needed. Add a buffer for uneven field conditions and weighbridge rounding so you don't underestimate the last load.
