Formula
protein per meal = daily protein g ÷ meals (protein = 4 kcal/g)= 30

How is protein per meal calculated from a daily target?+
The calculator divides your total daily protein target by the number of meals you specify, optionally weighting some meals more heavily than others, to give a grams-of-protein target for each individual meal.
Why do some guidelines recommend spreading protein evenly across meals?+
Research suggests muscle protein synthesis is maximized when protein intake is distributed across multiple meals (commonly cited as 20-40 grams per meal) rather than concentrated mostly in one meal, since the body can only use so much protein for muscle building at a given time.
Is there a minimum amount of protein per meal that's considered effective?+
Many studies point to roughly 20-30 grams of high-quality protein per meal as sufficient to meaningfully stimulate muscle protein synthesis in most adults, though needs can be somewhat higher for older adults due to reduced anabolic sensitivity.
Does it matter if one meal has much more protein than others?+
It's not harmful, but evenly distributing protein may make more efficient use of it for muscle-related goals than a heavily skewed pattern (for example, very little at breakfast and most at dinner), since excess protein beyond what one meal can utilize is primarily used for energy rather than muscle building.
Should meal-by-meal protein change on training versus rest days?+
Total daily protein needs stay fairly similar between training and rest days for most goals, but some people prioritize slightly more protein around workout times on training days — the calculator's even split is a reasonable default that you can adjust based on your own schedule.
