Note
This is a simplified model: it applies a standard navigation, performance or seamanship formula to the numbers you entered. True airspeed and density altitude use the ISA troposphere model for dry air and ignore humidity, compressibility and instrument or position error, so they are not a substitute for your aircraft's flight manual or an air data computer. Wind, climb, descent and fuel figures assume a steady wind and a constant speed and fuel flow for the whole leg; they ignore manoeuvring, holding, taxi and start-up fuel, terrain, turbulence and air traffic control routing. Takeoff distance scales an entered sea level figure by a rule-of-thumb percentage per 1000 ft of density altitude and is not a certified performance chart. Weight and balance results depend entirely on the arms and weights you enter and must be checked against the approved loading envelope. Hull speed is the classic 1.34 × √LWL displacement estimate, boat fuel burn is a horsepower-based approximation, anchor scope is a rule of thumb, and the rule of twelfths is a linear approximation of a sinusoidal tide that does not hold in all locations. Always use official charts, tide tables, the aircraft or vessel manuals and current weather, and treat these numbers as planning estimates only.

What is a knot and how does it relate to km/h and mph?+
A knot is one nautical mile per hour. Since 1 nautical mile equals 1.852 kilometers, 1 knot equals 1.852 km/h, and since 1 mile equals 1.609 kilometers, 1 knot also equals approximately 1.151 mph.
Why do aviation and marine speeds use knots instead of km/h or mph?+
Knots align directly with nautical miles, which correspond to minutes of latitude on navigation charts, making speed, distance, and time calculations consistent with the coordinate system pilots and sailors already use for position and route planning.
What's a common mistake when converting knots to mph?+
Using the wrong multiplier — some people mistakenly apply the km/h conversion factor (1.852) when converting to mph, or vice versa, when the correct mph factor is approximately 1.151. The two conversion factors are different because a mile and a kilometer are different lengths.
Why might a wind speed reported in knots seem faster than the same number in mph?+
Because a knot represents more distance per hour than a mile, a wind reported as 20 knots is actually about 23 mph, not 20. This matters for weather interpretation, since METAR and marine forecasts commonly report in knots.
Is the knots-to-km/h or knots-to-mph conversion factor exact or rounded?+
The knots-to-km/h factor (1.852) is exact by definition, since the nautical mile itself is defined as exactly 1,852 meters. The knots-to-mph factor (about 1.15078) is a derived value and is typically rounded for display, though the calculator uses the fuller precision internally.
